There are all types of ways you can work. Think of it less as a difference in watercolor vs oils and more as the idea that you are actually painting depth and structure into your painting…the shadow areas of the feathers lie on a different plane than do the highlighted areas. There’s always going to be some lighter areas that are going to need to be added later. Maybe it’s because I’m so terrible at watercolor, I don’t know. There’s nothing “wrong” with either (or neither!) and it can depend on the area you’re painting.

I don’t see how either has to be a “rule”, and indeed I never think about it at all. Frankly, I’m always confused when people start talking about whether to paint “from light to dark” or “dark to light”.
